Tim's Strangeland Track-by-track: #11 In Your Own Time

11 - IN YOUR OWN TIME
This was another '20 Song Game' effort - I wrote it the same day as Silenced By The Night, Black Rain, and Run With Me (and, for Mt Desolation fans, Dividing Line, Your Kind Of Life, and Wherever You Were Going). I remember finishing it in Toronto on a day off, and then doing the demo in New York City - another duvet-on-my-head moment! Tom was always a bit fan of this one and really pushed it forward. That's often the way it works - you have a lot of songs that everyone agrees on, but then each band member will have a song that they really champion because they hear something in it that everyone else hasn't quite picked up on yet. With Richard it was The Starting Line. Anyway I think the emotional content of this one is quite representative of the whole album - the story is basically "I've realised that I have no idea what's going on in life, so I'm not going to judge anyone else!" I feel it has an atmosphere of sympathy and grace. Also the middle 8 is one of my favourite parts of the record. Under the word "time" at the end of the middle 8 you may be able to make out the four of us all singing "Aaaaah" very operatically. Like a choir of angels falling down an elevator shaft.

Este tema fue un esfuerzo parecido al juego de los 20 temas –La compuse el mismo día que Silenced By The Night, Black Rain y Run With Me (y para los fans de Mt Desolation: Dividing Line, Your Kind Of Life y Wherever You Were Going). Recuerdo que se me ocurrió en un día libre en Toronto y después hicimos la maqueta en Nueva York - ¡otro momento de estar metido debajo del edredón! Siempre me ha gustado mucho esta canción y aposté por ella hasta el límite para desarrollarla. Así funciona casi siempre, tienes un montón de canciones con las que todo el mundo está de acuerdo, pero luego cada componente de la banda tiene una canción en concreto que hacen valer porque han escuchado algo en ese tema que los demás no acaban de captar del todo. A Richard le pasaba con The Starting Line. En cualquier caso el contenido emocional de esta canción es representativo de todo el disco – la historia es básicamente: "Soy consciente de no saber qué pasa con mi vida, así que no ¡pienso juzgar a nadie más!" Creo que la canción tiene una atmósfera de empatía y gentileza. El interludio central es una mis partes favoritas del disco. Con la palabra "time" al final del interludio puede que seas capaz de vernos a los cuatro cantando "Aaaaah" de forma muy operística. Como un coro de ángeles cayendo por el hueco del ascensor.

when the intial shock wore off and disbelief and numbness set in....my heart still couldn comprehend it all...nor could my mind... I made the mistake of believing that our relationship was immune to this sort of thing....that was my mistake....believing...In you.... I agree with whoever said please add this to the North American tour setlist. I love this song!! This whole album, I love it so much. I'm going through some heartache right now, emotional times. Been crying in my car listening to some of these songs. There's nothing else like Keane.

This song is amazing! I really love it.
What an amazing song, my favourite on the album. The sincerity and emotion in the lyrics are just beautiful and touching. The lyrics that speak volumes to me are "there's no map to guide our way, so I say nothing, you say nothing and "things are going to change, you know, the battles you have fought won't go to waste" how profound, truly brilliant. I really hope this is on the set list for June 9th, what a sumptious treat that would be. I was tearful when I heard 'Watch How You Go' for the first time at Bexhill.........stunning too. Much love :)
Fortunately i have almost all the songs of Keane. Today my cat died. I had him 17 years. I'm very sad, but their music gives me a little bit consolation.

Mt. Desolation? Dividing Line? Wherever You Were Going? Are you holding out on us, Tim? These two songs are not on my Mt. D CD, nor do I remember your singing them at the gig...and I was there! Are you dropping a hint that you are compiling songs for the next Mt. Desolation? That would be utterly fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!! ....And I love the "moment of realization" approach to In Your Own Time..realizing you know nothing more than the next person, who also knows next to nothing...That's life in a nutshell, isn't it? ....and the World keeps spinning 'round....

I know - here - we get a little open door or window we can look through, to maybe realize the song meaning without getting a wall for restriction of our imagination, but I really like very much the intro Run With Me. I somehow haven't really grasped the song's emotional content yet - unfortunately. But the emotional content must be very profound, since Tom seems to be deeply touched by it.....
