1 - YOU ARE YOUNG LEER ESTO EN ESPAÑOL
This is quite a philosophical song. I think more than anything it's a message to myself to try and stay young at heart. It definitely feels like a message to my daughter too, in places. And also from the beginning it always made me think of standing in a crowd at a festival, a huge mass of people united by a feeling of bliss and freedom, which are things that are most easily associated with being young - as you get older it gets harder to find that feeling, and I love the idea that music can lift us out of ourselves, make us forget our everyday troubles, make us feel young. I also think the line "You've got to bring some good into this world" pretty much sums up my view of being a human being - I kind of feel that bringing some good into the world is about the best thing you can hope to do in life. I'd say it's the reason we make music.
I think we all remember very clearly a moment when we were rehearsing this song together. We had spent many hours chopping and changing the structure of the song, trying to make it snappier and less ponderous, and when we eventually felt we had something worth listening to we went into the control room to listen to what we had done. When it got to the 'outro' section after the breakdown there was a real feeling of energy and excitement in the room, of knowing we had created something a little bit magical. Those are the moments you live for as a band.

Es una canción bastante filosófica. Es más que nada un mensaje para mí mismo, para intentar mantenerme joven de espíritu. También en algunos aspectos, es un mensaje para mi hija. Y desde el principio me hizo pensar en la sensación de encontrarme entre el público de un festival, una gran masa de personas unidas por un sentimiento de dicha y libertad, aspectos que se asocian fundamentalmente a ser joven – según te haces mayor es más difícil tener acceso a esas sensaciones y me encanta la idea de que la música sea capaz de sacarnos de nuestra realidad individual para hacernos olvidar nuestros problemas diarios y lograr que nos sintamos jóvenes. También creo que el verso: "You've got to bring some good into this world/ Tienes que aportar algo bueno al mundo)" resume muy bien mi visión de lo que es el ser humano. Para mi aportar algo positivo, algo bueno al mundo es lo mejor que puede uno hacer en la vida. Yo diría que es el motivo por el que hacemos música.
Creo que todos nos acordamos perfectamente del momento en el que estábamos ensayando este tema juntos. Habíamos dedicado muchas horas a cambiar la estructura del tema cortando aquí y allá para que fuese más ágil y menos elaborado, hasta que nos quedamos satisfechos, pensamos que la canción merecía la escucha y nos metimos en la sala de control. Cuando llegamos a la parte del outro tras la interrupción, se notaba una sensación de energía y de entusiasmo en la habitación, a sabiendas de que habíamos creado un tema con algo de magia. Estos son los momentos que te dan la vida como grupo.

Tim, you are a genius! You know how to touch my heart. You songs are poetry! And I identify with most of them. They always give me a lesson and I always find them really inspiring. Dear Tim, your words are so meaningful to me. I think music is a reflection of the composer himself: his values, his heart, and his depth. When that music has a strong positive message that goes right into the listeners heart, as you said - you have spread good (and let me add love) to others. When I drive my way back home and feel nervous because of traffic or because I had a tough day at work, I put Hopes and Fears and it gives me comfort and in a way that pampers me. No other music or band gives me this feeling. It is not only your lyrics that are southing, but also your song arrangements have a morphine effect. It is hard to explain but it really works for me: A dose of Keane a day, takes my blues away….Hugs!! Giselle

Thanks to Tim and to km.com for this new section! Nothing can add more value to the songs than the words of the songwriter himself. This song is a caress to the heart, an invitation to live the present time and to share love, with this brilliant double effect of protecting and being protected. "Pay no mind at all to all the things that you don`t know" reminded me to beautiful Rilke's "Letters to a young poet", have you read it? I also love the leit motif of laying down our load, that repeats tenderly along Strangeland. Having a "look" at one of your songs from the "inside" is always so nice and interesting; understanding where it is from I mean, and what inspired you to write it. It's amazing how you can translate such a simple thought and feeling in such beautiful lyrics and music. This song is extremely sweet, and obviously the "presence" of a child (or a daughter :) can not be denied, it's a very careing and protective message, but also gives you (or at least this is my impression) a vision of what really matters once you are outside the phisical "protective shield" of people who care for you. As you said, you just have to stay young at heart, and try to do some good in this world :) Thanks for the opportunity of having more details about the new songs, I guess this is just the beginning of a long and pleasant journey through the 12/16 songs of Strangeland.
